[OOC] Canon-updating essay

jerkchesterThis will all contain spoilers up to episode ten of season five. These are basically notes (for my reference) and for anyone else who might notice something ~different~ about Dean.
You know what I love about season five?
Dean finally gets things.
Well, after a while. The finale for season four left a lot of things for Dean to muse about. Especially about him and Sam. Because Sam chose Ruby over him. Dean said it once in Sex and Violence that it was (in not so many words, but the gist was there) the thing he was most concerned and angry about, that eventually Sam will side with Ruby, a demon over him, his own brother. This shattered a whole bunch of preconceptions Dean's been carrying for his entire life. And he hated it. He hated being wrong, he hated Ruby (once updated, he'll... never be able to thread with her again, he'll just kill her on sight and love it) and he spent a good deal of that episode being whiny and upset. And even when he and Sam somewhat made up in Sympathy for the Devil, he still harboured that resentment and didn't want to deal with it. So he separated from Sam, tried to do things his way and tried to pretend things were better without Sam (I still feel what he told Cas at the end of Free to be You and Me was mostly for his own benefit than Cas'. If Dean really believed he was doing fine without Sam, he would have never said it). So for three episodes, he's a bitter snowflake. Then The End comes along and Dean moves from anger... to a certain revelation. A revelation that drives home only after the Paris Hilton whaling.
That he needed to stop seeing Sam as a job, an obligation. He needed to see Sam as his partner. He needed to see Sam as Sam. His own person. And he's not fully there yet, but he's working on it! For the first time! (guys I'm so proud of that. SO PROUD). He will still tease and bug Sam, but he will also give him his space. That, is the crux of Dean's development with Sam and in general.

Anyway! Dean and Cas had an, er, interesting conversation S4 finale. Dean got some sense knocked into him when Zachariah revealed his plans and he, in turn, knocked some sense into Cas. Then Castiel betrayed heaven! FOR DEAN!! No seriously. That's what he says. And post-finale, Dean was really upset Cas got killed on his behalf (which. is hilarious since Dean was responsible for it, I mean c'mon man) and kinda ... weirded out by the new on-his-side!Cas. Like, wow, isn't that a complete 180. But despite his own bitching and poking at Cas, Dean does very much trust him. No, really, there is very strong level of trust here that Dean doesn't have with a lot of people, save Bobby. So if Cas was like "Dean, we must jump off this cliff to save the world", Dean will promptly 1) wtf cas 2) whhhhhy 3) o fine ... damnit but he'll do it. Dean is many things, but ungrateful is never one of them. He will take Castiel for his word, he'll look out for him ten times more than what he did in camp, he wants to make Cas, in some way, happy. Because Dean was responsible for royally screwing up Cas' life and the least he can do is make some things easier for him. If this means hookers or letting Cas hold his hand, well, okay, but seriously personal space man.
On the othersssss, Dean still feels bad for Bobby being crippled, but Bobby is always awesome in his eyes and he will never stop. Dean loev Bobby :(. And uh, Ellen and Jo, god, Dean hates the fact that their deaths were for nothing. Fucking Lucifer and his fucking immunity.

- For the observant, Dean isn't wearing his amulet anymore. Castiel has it now and if Cas wants to use it in camp for god-pinging adventures, you'll have to talk to her.
- You might notice less SamSamSamprotectkeep etc mind-set. It'll be more how is he doing, okay man, space, let him be, he needs to work it out on his own.
- Dean is Michael's vessel. He knows it which means every conversation with Michael now would be awkward.
- He also met Raphael! Another awkward moment. HE BLEW CAS UP >( the dickhead
- Dean now owns the Trickster :D
- Dean has a crush on Doctor Sexy and likes wearing pink panties.
- Dean now knows he has a fandom. Let the fourth-walling commence!
- Dean is never having wet dreams about Paris Hilton ever again.
